Wolf D. Busse, Ph.D.
Chief Executive Officer, ACT Biotech
Dr. Busse is also a Venture Partner of NGN Capital since
the beginning of 2006. Prior to these positions he was
CEO and
founder of Aerovance, a spin-out from Bayer Corporation in
Berkeley, CA. Dr. Busse complements 20+ years of experience
in drug development and discovery including biologics. He
served as Senior Vice President in several global functions
of Bayer
Health Care and subsequently served as General Manager of
the Biotechnology Unit of Bayer Healthcare in Berkeley,
CA. He
was Bayer’s first Pharmaceutical Research Director
at West Haven, CT and launched its US Pharma R&D division.
During this time he founded Molecular Diagnostics and Molecular
Therapeutics, majority owned by Bayer. His organization brought
more than 50 clinical drug candidates into development and
several important drugs to the market.
Dr. Busse has been a global leader for Biotechnology at Bayer,
interacting with VC-funded Biotechnology Companies and closing
many deals for Bayer including partnerships with Onyx, Arris,
Scios, Morphosys and Incyte.
Dr. Busse graduated as Chemist and Biochemist at the Technical
University of Aachen, Germany, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship
in the Biochemistry Department at UC Berkeley. He was appointed
Honorary Professor at the German University of Cologne in the
Department of Human Genetics teaching Industrial Biotechnology.
He was a Board member of Onyx Pharmaceuticals, BIO, CHI and
Aerovance.

Ali Fattaey, Ph.D.
Senior Consultant Science and Technology of the Melanoma Therapeutics
Foundation
Dr. Fattaey has been engaged in cancer research, drug discovery
and development for the past 17 years. Most recently Dr. Fattaey
served as Chief Scientific Officer of Sagres Discovery from
2002 through 2004 where he lead the discovery and development
of anti-cancer therapeutics using Sagres’ proprietary
Oncogenome™ technology. Dr. Fattaey later joined Chiron
Corporation upon its acquisition of Sagres Discovery in late
2004.
Prior to Sagres, Dr. Fattaey joined Onyx Pharmaceuticals in
1994 where he served as the Vice President of Discovery Research
from 1998 to 2001. At Onyx, Dr. Fattaey was responsible for
multiple programs in collaboration with Pfizer and Bayer pharmaceutical
companies focused on the discovery of small molecule drugs
directed at intracellular signaling enzymes in the Ras and
cell cycle regulation pathways as cancer therapeutics. Products
of these programs include Nexavar?, an anti-cancer small molecule
drug approved by the FDA for treatment of kidney cancer patients
and PD-0332991, a small molecule inhibitor of cyclin-dependent
kinase 4, which has recently completed Phase I clinical testing
in cancer patients. Dr. Fattaey also directed the discovery
of a highly novel strategy for treatment of cancer using selectively
replicating human adenoviruses. One of these viruses, H101
(ONYX-015) is now approved in China for the treatment of patients
with head-and-neck cancer.
Dr. Fattaey received his Ph.D. in microbiology from Kansas
State University in 1989 and was a Research Fellow in Medicine
at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer
Center.

John W. Mahoney, J.D., M.A.
Intellectual Property Counsel of the Melanoma Therapeutics
Foundation
Prior to joining the Foundation, Mr. Mahoney served as Patent
Counsel to the Hematology and Cardiology Division of Bayer
HealthCare LLC. From February 2001 to April 2005, he was Patent
Counsel to the Biotechnology Research Division of Bayer Pharmaceutical
Corporation. Mr. Mahoney has extensive experience preparing
and prosecuting patent applications on novel therapeutic compounds,
performing due diligence evaluations on in-licensing drug candidates,
negotiating contracts with research and technology development
organizations, and advising research teams on drug development
opportunities. He also has substantial experience working as
a legal advisor to product development teams. Before joining
Bayer, he was Patent Counsel at the University of California's
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Mr. Mahoney holds a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from St. Mary's
College of California, an M.A. in Cell Biology from the California
State University at Fresno, and a J.D. from Golden Gate University.
Mr. Mahoney is a member of the California State Bar and is
registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
